Enrolling First Years: Two Deadlines Today!

Hello new first-year students! I wanted to remind you of two important deadlines that are upon us today.

Today is the registration deadline for First-Year Orientation. If you sign up after today, you'll be charged an extra $50 so hop to it! You can sign up on their website. (For those of you who have been recently admitted from the waitlist, this deadline does not apply to you. You have until July 1 to sign up for orientation.)

Today is also the last day to register for the June 1 SAT date. If you haven't yet taken the SAT Math 2 Subject Test, we strongly recommend that you do so. The Math department requires a placement score for any student who wishes to enroll in Math 110, 130, 152, or 231. Without an AP, IB, or SAT Subject Test score on file, you won't be able to register for any of these courses. (A math placement score is also required for a number of our science classes.) If you're awaiting an AP or IB math score this summer, keep in mind that it probably won't arrive until after you attend Orientation and register for classes.

Transfer Enrollment Deadline is Wednesday

The enrollment deadline for admitted transfer students is coming up this Wednesday, May 15 at 11:59 pm ET. If you haven't yet responded to our offer of admission, we hope to hear from you soon! Transfer students bring such a wide range of experiences and perspectives to our campus and we're grateful for the students who choose to join our community as sophomores and juniors. One of our own Admissions Ambassadors, Camille McGirt, transferred here as a junior and has done some outstanding work in the area of public health and service. Below is a little more of her story:

My name is Camille, yesterday I graduated from UNC with a BSPH in Health Policy and Management. I came here as a junior transfer student, and it's hard to believe how quickly my two years at Carolina have flown by.

I chose Carolina because I knew it would offer me a thought-provoking academic experience, an engaging social spectrum, and the space and resources to allow my dreams to build a non-profit come true. With help from the people and resources here, I started Healthy Girls Save the World, an organization that provides preventive health education to girls in North Carolina. We work with campus partners to teach young girls about healthy bodies, minds, and relationships.

With graduation behind me, I'm now planning to pursue my interest in public service and attend graduate school. My ultimate goal is to expand Healthy Girls Save the World internationally. What started as a summer project I hope will eventually become not only a career for myself, but an organization that will touch the lives of girls around the globe.

As you consider where you'll spend the rest of your college years, don't be afraid to dream big. The undergraduate experience is what you make it, but at Carolina it always seems that the sky is the limit!

Enrollment Deadline for First Years is Today!

Happy May Day! May 1 is our enrollment deadline for admitted first-year students so if you haven't yet responded to our offer of admission, today is the day! You can enroll online through MyCarolina. And once you've enrolled, check out our admitted student website for lots of information about what to do next.

Explore New Interests at Carolina

Carolina students go on to do some pretty amazing things after spending four years with us. Last up in our short series of senior stories is Sarb...

When I came to Carolina, I was mainly focused on academics and research with a few hours reserved each week to cheer on our world-class sports teams. The one commitment I had that wasn’t purely academic was Admissions Ambassadors, which I joined to improve my public speaking skills in hopes of delivering better academic presentations. Ironically, it was my fellow Ambassadors who inspired me to break out of my academic shell and experience all that Carolina has to offer.

While listening to other Ambassadors’ service experiences, I was amazed at the scope and impact of their commitment to their respective causes. Their passion and enthusiasm opened my eyes to the many opportunities available at Carolina and helped me realize that developing other interests could only help my research and academics. I began to tutor and volunteer at area hospitals and with my friends’ service organizations. I’m now a Buckley Public Service Scholar and a Carolina Research Scholar, and I recently completed a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Each of these rich experiences helped me earn admission into the School of Medicine at the University of Virgina, where I will begin studying in the fall.

Expand Your Network at Carolina

Carolina students go on to do some pretty amazing things after spending four years with us. Next up in our short series of senior stories is Jane...

My name is Jane, and I’m a senior from Charlotte, NC. As I prepare to graduate in a few weeks, I can’t help but be thankful for all that I have experienced during my time at Carolina. In addition to being some of the most intelligent people I’ve ever met, my classmates are also incredibly kind and welcoming. Instead of fierce competition, we work together to accomplish our goals and change the world.

Majoring in journalism and double minoring in information systems and entrepreneurship connected me with a diverse range of student organizations – from Women in Entrepreneurship to Students for the Ackland Art Museum. I also served as vice president of my sorority, Delta Delta Delta, and I’m still close with friends I made while living on campus my first year. As a campus ambassador with Twitter, Square, and Google, I’ve had the unique opportunity to build my professional network and collaborate with other student leaders by spreading my passion for innovative technology.

The Carolina network is invaluable, and I’ve learned that it extends far beyond Chapel Hill. Not only did I travel to New York with the Advertising Club, but I spent two summers interning in Los Angeles and San Francisco. I’ll actually be heading back to California in the fall to begin working for Google, which is something I wouldn’t have been able to achieve without the support of my Carolina community!

Enrolling Students: Where to Send Payments and Outside Scholarship Funds

We've had a number of enrolling students calling with questions about billing for the Fall semester. When your bill for the fall semester is ready, you'll receive an email with instructions on how to view it in your MyUNC Student Center. If you're expecting scholarship funds from outside sources (not through the University), you may defer these charges until the funds are available. (More info on that here.) Below is some additional information from the Cashier's office regarding where to send these scholarship funds:

Students receiving funding from sources outside of the University (i.e. entities other than the Office of Scholarships & Student Aid (OSSA), University Departments and the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) should complete the Outside Scholarships & Resources Reporting Form and return it to OSSA.  The Scholarship Provider should make check(s) payable to UNC-CH and send them to the check payment address below, making sure to include the student's full name and  UNC-CH PID, the full name of the scholarship and the terms to which the funds should be applied.

Don't "Paws" Too Long: Carolina's Enrollment Deadline is Tomorrow!

It's been a crazy few weeks here on campus.

From President Obama's visit to final exams to Neil DeGrasse Tyson, there's been a lot of activity at Carolina lately.

Amidst all the hustle and bustle, it's been tough to find a few moments of calm. More than once, I've found myself feeling like this:

"AHH! APRIL! AHH!"

This is Whiskey. She's a therapy dog, part of a team that comes to campus during exam week to provide stress relief for students, faculty, and staff. Whiskey and her fellow therapy dogs work with patients at the NC Children's Hospital, assisted living homes, and other area medical centers to provide calming care to aid in the healing process. Whiskey, Mazie, and Teddy spent last Thursday in the Park Library of the J-School, ready and eager to give tail wags and puppy kisses in return for belly rubs and  treats - and, of course, lots of pictures. Silvia, Whiskey's mom/handler, told us that in the beginning, Whiskey was a jumper - very eager, very smart, but not so refined. Now, Whiskey knows that the day after she gets her bath, it's time to go to work. When the bandanas come out, it's game on.

Whiskey has some choices to make, too.

As we make this final push towards tomorrow's enrollment deadline for our admitted first-year students (admitted transfers, you still have until May 16), we know that this is a crazy time of year for you, too. Some of you have already decided upon your plans for the fall and are now sifting through mountains of information about housing, orientation, and thinking about what you'll study next year. But some of you are still in the throes of making a very big decision: which school will be the best fit for you? Which school will enable you to grow as a scholar AND as a person? Which school has the opportunities for research, study abroad, internships, public service,  academics and connections with great students that are most important to you?

Sometimes advice can be heavy-handed.

Lots of people are offering you advice and guidance - some of it welcome, some of it subtle, some of it...less so. It seems everyone has an opinion and sorting through all your options can be pretty overwhelming.

After learning about the amazing things you've already accomplished from reading your applications, we are so excited about the possibility of you joining our community and making an impact here at Carolina. But our hopes and dreams are secondary to yours: in the end, this is YOUR decision. 

 YOU are the one who's going to college and YOU are the one who will be living on campus, taking classes, and deciding how to spend your time. And in the end, what's important is that you choose the school that enables you to grow, learn, and become the person you want - and deserve - to be.

Admitted transfer students: Ease your stress by remembering to RSVP for the Academic Advising Program’s transfer student welcome reception on Friday, May 4 from 4:30-6:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to meet professors, current students, and your new classmates in an informal setting. You will get to hear from current transfer students and enjoy light refreshments overlooking Kenan Football Stadium. Friends and family members are welcome to attend with you.

Enrolling Students: How to Access the Enrollment Portlet

If you're an enrolling first-year or transfer student, you'll find many of the next steps for enrollment on your MyUNC account. By going to your enrollment portlet, you can access information about housing, orientation, required health forms and more.

Only students who have indicated that they will be enrolling at Carolina and paid their enrollment deposit will have access to the enrollment portlet. Keep in mind that it can take 24-48 hours for an online payment to clear, and a bit longer for check payments sent by mail.

To access your enrollment portlet, log in with your Onyen and password. Click the "About" link at top left. You enrollment portlet should then appear. Please let us know if you have any questions!

New First Years: Don't forget to sign up for New Student Orientation!

If you're an enrolling first-year student, we encourage you to sign up for Orientation as soon as possible. The Orientation program is designed to help you make a smooth transition to Carolina, and all first-year students are required to attend a two-day orientation program. Enrolling Students: AP and Other Test Scores

We recently imported all test scores for enrolling first-year and transfer students, and we are working to evaluate and post the credit that students will receive with these scores. The scores are not currently available to view on your MyUNC page, but we hope to have them up soon.

If you are an enrolling student and have not yet sent us your scores, please have the testing agency send us an official score report. If you have already sent us your scores, please be patient as we review and post this credit to your account. You can view details on what placement and credit we award for test scores by visiting our Placement Credit page.

We plan to have all test score credit evaluated and posted to students’ accounts by August 13.
