First-Deadline Decisions

Good morning all! We know how anxious many of you are, and we wanted to post a short note to let you know that we are still on schedule to release decisions today, though you should not expect them until this afternoon. We appreciate your patience!

Update on First-Deadline Decisions

We write to let you know that we're on schedule to post decisions tomorrow for our first-deadline candidates whose applications are complete. We're very sorry, but unfortunately, we do not know what time decisions will be posted. Letters are also scheduled to mail tomorrow.

Below are the steps to view your decision when it's available:

1. Log into MyUNC.
2. Under “AS Bachelor, 2011 Fall," select “View Official Test Scores, Outstanding Items, and Application Status.”Your Student Center will appear. Under Admissions, select “Click here to view your decision."
3. In order to view your decision, please note that, if applicable, the pop-up blocker feature on your computer must be disabled.

Internet Explorer

1. In the menu bar, go to Tools and navigate down to “Pop-up Blocker Settings.”
2. Click on “Turn-Off Pop-up Blocker.”

Google Toolbar

1. Click the Google Pop-up Blocker toolbar icon.
2. The Pop-up Blocker icon should read “Popups are okay.”

Mozilla Firefox

1. In the menu bar, go to Tools and navigate down to Options.
2. Select “Content” tab or icon.
3. Uncheck box labeled “Block pop-up windows.”

AOL

1. Click on “Blocking Pop-ups” at the bottom right corner of the AOL window.
2. Uncheck box labeled “Suppress pop-ups from websites I visit.”
3. Click “Save” button.

Yahoo Toolbar

1. Click on the Yahoo Toolbar's popup blocker icon option arrow. This arrow is pointing down beside of the popup blocker icon.
2. Click on “Enable Pop-up Blocker” to uncheck.

Chrome

1. To allow blocked pop-ups when you're already on a site, follow these steps:
2. Click the “Pop-ups Blocked” alert at the bottom right-hand corner of the browser tab.
3. Select the pop-up that you'd like to allow.
4. If you'd like, select “Always show pop-ups” from (site).

If you're using Google Chrome Beta for Windows, the site is added to the exceptions list, which you can manage in the Content Settings dialog (go to Tools menu > Options > Under the Hood to open the dialog box).

If you're using Google Chrome Beta for Windows, you can also disable the pop-up blocker completely. Follow these steps:

1. Click the “Tools” menu
2. Select “Options."
3. Click the “Under the Hood” tab.
4. Click Content settings in the "Privacy" section.
5. Click the “Pop-ups” tab.
6. Select "Allow all sites to show pop-ups." You can make exceptions for specific websites by clicking Exceptions.
7. Click “Close” to save your setting.

Safari

1. Open the Safari menu and select the “Preferences” option.
2. In the window that displays, click on the “Security” option.
3. Remove the checkmark from the “Block pop-up” windows option.
4. Close the window.

Or, for an older version of Safari, try

1. Open Safari
2. Click on the Safari Menu
3. Uncheck “Block Pop-Up Windows”

Update on First-Deadline Decisions

With nine days to go before our first notification date, we write to thank all of the 14,000 first-deadline candidates who honored Carolina by applying for admission. Over the last three months, as we’ve read your applications one by one and over and over again, we’ve been steadily impressed by your achievements and your potential. We have also been humbled by your patience. You have borne this long wait with grace and good humor, and we are grateful.

We expect to finish on time our evaluations of first-deadline candidates whose applications are complete. If you applied first deadline and your application is complete, we plan to post your decision on MyUNC on or around January 21, 2011. We expect letters to arrive by mail at around the same time or shortly thereafter.

Final Deadline is One Week Away

If you’ve applied already, we thank you for your interest in us. If you haven’t yet submitted your application, we’d like to remind you that our final application deadline is next Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time (10:59 p.m. Central Time, 9:59 p.m. Mountain Time, or 8:59 p.m. Pacific Time).

If you're unable to apply by January 18, you're welcome to submit an application by January 31 to be considered on a space-available basis.

Carolina Named Best Value Again by Kiplinger's

Today we're honored to announce that the February 2011 edition of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has named Carolina first among the nation's public colleges and universities for delivering an outstanding education at an affordable price. This is the tenth consecutive time that Carolina has earned this honor since the national magazine first began this special edition in 1998.

Application Update -- Updated December 15

To all of our applicants, we thank you for your patience while we continue to carefully review our mail and attach all of your supplemental materials to your applications. We write today to give you an update on our progress.

As of yesterday at 5 p.m., we have reviewed 99 percent of our 14,000 first-deadline applications for completeness and we have forwarded nearly 12,000 applications to our admissions committee to be read. We are enjoying reading your applications and getting to know you.

If your missing items were sent to us on or after December 7, there is no need to send them again or call about them at this time. If the missing items were sent to us before December 7, we apologize that we must ask you to send them to us again. However, if you sent your missing items through Naviance, Docufide or CFNC, and your To-Do still shows these items as missing, please contact us and we will assist you.

If we have not received your missing items by December 23, 2010, the admissions committee will review your application on the basis of the information that is available and may, at its discretion, either deny your application for admission or withdraw your application from further consideration.

Please remember that school transcripts must be official copies received through electronic transmission or by mail; all other items may be emailed to uncsubmit@admissions.unc.edu or faxed to (919) 843-2326. Please be sure all correspondence includes your full name and your birth date.

Congratulations to Our New Rhodes Scholars!

Carolina seniors Laurence Deschamps-Laporte and Steven Paul Shorkey Jr. have won Rhodes Scholarships, the world’s oldest and best known awards for graduate study. Since the Rhodes program began in 1904, Carolina has produced 47 Rhodes Scholars so far. This year marks the seventh time that Carolina has had two Rhodes winners in the same year – and the third year in a row.

Updated: With Rhodes districts reporting Sunday (Nov. 21): Among all research universities, Carolina ranks fifth in the number of Rhodes Scholars in the last five years, behind only Harvard, Yale, Stanford and Princeton. Over the last 10 years, Carolina is tied for sixth, with the U.S. Military Academy and Duke University. In the last five, 10 and 25 years, Carolina has produced more Rhodes Scholars than any other U.S. public university.
