We've passed our early action deadline, and now we're looking ahead to our final first-year application deadline on January 5, 2012. So if you haven't applied yet, you have just over two months to: 1) eat plenty of holiday turkey and pie--this is very important; 2) finish your Carolina application; and 3) oh yeah, school and sports and all the other things that you do. No worries! You can do it.
Some students worry that applying regular decision will be more competitive, or that we won't think they are as interested in Carolina and so be tougher on them. Nope. We really don't care which deadline you choose. We offer two deadlines to give students more options, and we trust you to choose the deadline that works best with your schedule. We work very hard to make sure that each applicant is considered within the context of our entire applicant pool, so early-action and regular-decision candidates are held to the very same standards. And we review applicants solely on the basis of the information submitted within their application, so demonstrated interest on the part of the student is a non-factor. While we are completely honored to learn that Carolina is a student's first-choice college and we love meeting students on campus or during our recruitment travels, those indicators of interest are not going to play a role in our review of their application. We want all of our applicants on a level playing field, so whether you apply first or second deadline you'll receive exactly the same review.
As a reminder, regular decision applicants must apply by January 5 and will get their decision by the end of March. All admitted students from both deadlines will have until May 1 to make up their mind about whether or not they'll enroll at Carolina. Let me know if you have any questions!
Hey UNC-CH team! Hope reading over the first deadline applications is going well. I was wondering when those of us who did apply for EA would hear back from you guys? I've heard around Christmas, in the middle of January, and at the end of January. Which one is it? Couldn't find a date on the website or on this blog. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSame question as Eric V., I saw somewhere that the official date was Jan 30, but people from last year say that they heard a little earlier than their date, so I was wondering if people get notified up TO the final date, or just on the final date?
ReplyDeleteHi Maggie and Eric,
ReplyDeleteWe plan to notify Early Action candidates by January 30. We'll release all EA decisions at the same time. Thanks for the question!
Julie, Admissions
Hi Julie not really an admissions question but I didn't know where else to ask. I self-nominated myself for the Morehead-Cain scholarship and was wondering when I would know if I made it to the next round.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Hey Julie!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering when the admissions team would begin reviewing applications from the first deadline?
Thanks so much!
Victoria K.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Morehead-Cain website, semifinalists from North Carolina will be notified on December 2. Out-of-state semifinalists will be notified on October 31. Good luck!
Hi Victoria,
We've already begun reviewing Early Action applications, and we'll continue this work into January. We'll notify all EA candidates at the same time, by January 30. Thanks for the question.
Julie, Admissions
Hi, Julie!
ReplyDeleteI submitted my application for early action and set up my account. My counselor has sent my transcript to the university, but in my account it says that you have not yet received it. Should I call the admissions office about this? If you have not yet received my transcript, will you still consider me for early action? Thank you!
Hi Susannah, Yes, it's fine if your supplemental materials arrive after the deadline, that's not a problem. Keep in mind that it can take a bit of time (up to 4-6 weeks) for submitted materials to be linked to your application. Please just keep monitoring MyUNC for updates. We'll email you later in the fall if we're still missing any required materials. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteJulie, Admissions
Hi! I am not from a school that can self nominate for the Morehead-Cain. I applied early action and was instructed by the scholarship site that there is a chance I could be nominated by the UNC admissions. When would I be notified if I was nominated by the admissions committee?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Hi Julie,
ReplyDeleteI applied Early Action and submitted all of my materials a few days before the 15th. The problem is I did not send in my previous ACT scores; rather I have already arranged for my OCT. 22 scores to be sent directly to UNC. Do I need to send in my previous ones as well, or will the October scores, when they arrive, suffice?
Thanks!
Hi Julie,
ReplyDeleteI applied early action and I am taking the Sat again on November 5. I have already sent in my previous SAT scores. If I decide to send in my November SAT scores, will those scores be used in my admission decision even if my application has already been reviewed by the time you receive the November scores?
Thanks
Hi Anon#1,
ReplyDeleteMorehead-Cain will notify students who were selected through the Admissions Referral Program on Friday, December 16. Read more on their website. Thanks for the question!
Hi Anon#2,
Yes, it's fine for you to wait and send your Oct. 22 scores. The easiest thing to do is just send us all of your scores at that time, and we'll pick out your best subscores from all test dates and put them together to make your "superscore." Thanks!
Hi Anon#3,
Yes, we'll review all test scores taken through November for Early Action and through December for Regular Decision. So we'll consider your Nov. 5 test scores when they get here. Thanks!
Julie, Admissions
I applied through CFNC for early action and had my teacher e-mail the recommendation letter before October 15. It still says that it is missing, and I received an e-mail saying my application is incomplete. Also, I found out there is a form for teacher recommendation letters. Should I mail the letter instead with the form? Is it too late? It said that e-mailing was okay, but now I'm not sure. Thanks!
ReplyDelete-Meredith
Hi Meredith, We don't require the form with letters of recommendation, so that is not a problem. It sounds as though the email either went astray or we just haven't had time yet to link it to your application. If you'd like to have your teacher email it again, that should work just fine. Be sure your teacher sends it to uncsubmit@admissions.unc.edu and includes your full name and date of birth. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteJulie, Admissions
How much attention do you pay to SAT scores? Personally, I'm trying very hard to get my scores up. I'm active in clubs, have several leadership roles, kept my grades up through high school, and have a 3.7 unweighted gpa. I fear that my SAT scores will ruin my chances. Is it really a make it or break?
ReplyDeleteIf I missed the SAT in Nov because I was sick and I already submitted everything for the early deadline, what should I do? Should I apply to the regukar deadline too because im taking the sat in dec?
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteOur admissions review is a holistic one and we never admit or deny a student on the basis of a single number. We definitely understand that for many students, standardized test scores don't reflect their true abilities or potential to be successful at the college level. That's why we look at the entire application and consider all of the information together as we make our decisions. I hope this helps you feel more confident. I always tell students to just do their best on those tests and then move on. Dwelling on your scores can only stress you out. Hope this helps!
Anonymous2,
If you won't be able to submit test scores until after the December test date, we'll have to switch your application to Regular Decision. All you need to do is send us an email from the email address associated with your application and ask us to switch you to Regular Decision. Be sure to include your full name and date of birth. Thanks!
Julie, Admissions
Hi Julie, if there is nothing on my to do list on my myUNC account does that mean that UNC has received all of my application materials?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Grant
Hi Grant,
ReplyDeleteYes, if you don't see anything on your Admissions To-Do List, that means we've received all required materials for your application. You're all set! Keep checking MyUNC for any additional updates on the status of your application. Thanks for the question.
Julie, Admissions
Hi Julie,
ReplyDeleteIn previous comments, the EA decisions will be out by Jan 30. One student from my school claims that she;s received an offer from UN CH already with money tied to the application. Is there a difference for "need based"? It sounds like there is a priority with that...Is this a true statement? Thanks.
Hi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteWe release all of our first-year decisions at the same time (for each deadline), so I don't see how any student would have a decision yet. Our admissions review is need-blind so the financial aid review is an entirely separate process that takes place after a student is admitted. Merit scholarships are awarded after decisions are released as well. Thanks,
Julie, Admissions
if my 1st essay is over 560 words, do i need to shorten it? or is 250-500 required words an approximation?
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteWe ask that you stay close to the recommended word count. 560 words is just fine.
Thanks!

Where do I send my application fee waiver?
ReplyDeleteYou can send your fee waiver (or any other mailed application materials) to:
ReplyDeleteOffice of Undergraduate Admissions
UNC-CH
Campus Box 2200, Jackson Hall
Chapel Hill, NC 27599-2200
Thanks!
Julie
I am a NC resident and I've applied for the Morehead, but did not apply for the Early Action. Does this cancel me out from being considered by the Morehead? I just found out today that Morehead cains will be selected only by the Early Action application.
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteNo worries. So long as you submitted your Morehead-Cain application by their deadline, it's fine if you apply to UNC for Regular Decision. This is true for all NC residents. Only students who are out-of-state residents and do not attend a nominating school must apply by Early Action for consideration. It's a bit confusing, but the Apply section on the M-C website does a good job of explaining it. Thanks for the question!

Hi Julie,
ReplyDeleteI applied for EA and I sent all my sat scores, but I also just took the dec SAT and will also be taking the Jan one to improve my scores since its my weak spot. Can I just send you those scores as extra stuff for consideration or do I have to move my stuff to regular decision? At this point Im only still taking the SAT to get the best score and send it to you hopefully for consideration when you view my app. I'ld like to remain in EA but I don't want to ruin my chances of getting accpeted. Which way will give me the best chance of getting in?
Thankyou for answering all these questions!
Hi there,
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately we can't promise that we can consider test scores after the end of November for EA candidates. It's possible that we could receive a December test score in time, but you probably should not count on it given the timeframe. We just don't usually have time to consider these scores before decisions are finalized.
It's not too late to change your application to Regular Decision, but you'd have to wait that much longer for your decision.
In my experience, most students don't see significant increases in their scores after a second time taking the test, and it's really very rare that such an increase (even if it comes) would impact the admissions decision anyway. But I know it's hard to let it go when you're not happy with your scores yet. Just remember that it's only one factor in our holistic review and we try very much to see the big picture of who you are as a student, rather than one number. Hope this helps.

I get emails from the admissions board and I sent an email asking for my app to be switched but I didn't get a response. Can you check or can I let you know my name and birthday? My name is Aisha Anwar
ReplyDeleteHi Aisha,
ReplyDeleteWhat did you want changed on your application, your deadline? We currently have you down for Early Action. If that's incorrect or if you want to check on anything else, send us an email to unchelp@admissions.unc.edu. Thanks!
Julie, Admissions
Hey Julie!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how going over the first deadline's applications were going and if you could release a tentative date that you guys will be letting us know about our admissions status?
Thanks!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI really want to go to UNC. However, I have been told that applicants who do not waive the right to access letters of recommendation are automatically trashed.
I was wondering if this is true. I attend a school where my counselor was not available because of a family emergency and could not advise me in this area.
However, when the counselor did return, the recommendation was sent in via snail mail.
I did not waive my right because I simply chose what I felt would be a logical response. However, I have heard that the response to this LoR question is used as a weeding out tool particularly if you do not waive that right.
I have worked so hard that I would hope that this is not true. I hope that UNC admissions will consider more than just the right to waiver. Not all students have access to others who can advise them on these matters. I am not going to "hunt down" my references' comments. I am just a financially-challenged, smart, hard-working student who is seeking a better life at a great college.
Thanks,
Hi UNC Hopeful,
ReplyDeleteNo worries. We do not care whether or not you waive your access rights on the letters of rec. Not sure how that rumor might have started. But please trust me that it will have no impact whatsoever on the review of your application. Thanks!
Julie, Admissions
Hi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteSorry I missed your question above. We're hard at work reviewing Early Action applications right now. We're on target to release decisions as scheduled, by the end of January. I'll provide updates on this blog as I have them. Thanks!
Julie, Admissions
Dear Julie,
ReplyDeleteI'm from an OOS non-nominating school. I applied regular decision but did so by the Early Action deadline. Was I considered for the Morehead nomination?
Hi there,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but we can only consider Early Action candidates for the Morehead-Cain (if you're from an OOS non-nominating high school). Because you chose Regular Decision, we haven't reviewed your application yet and so we did not consider you for the Morehead-Cain. However, you'll still be considered for all of our other merit scholarships. The Morehead and the Pogue are the only ones that are restricted to EA applicants. Thanks for the question.
Julie, Admissions
Hi!
ReplyDeleteWhen are the letters of recommendation due for regular decision? On Jan. 5th, or can it be later?
Hi,
ReplyDeleteOnly your application must be submitted by Jan. 5. Other items (letters of rec, transcripts, etc) can arrive soon after the deadline. Thanks.
Julie, Admissions
Hi, I didn't know where to ask this in such a late moment but I am curious... I just found out that I will need to take either TOEFL or something and obviously, I haven't taken either. And I read you guys recommend finishing up taking the exam before January which in my case didn't happen... the fastest is on January 13th and I don't even know if I can make it or not because I have two mid-terms that day. I know it's really really late but would you possibly accept the score that comes in late? I mean like a month or two? possibly?
ReplyDeleteHi Yejin, We do require either a TOEFL or IELTS score for any international student whose native language is not English. If you're unable to submit a score by the end of January, you can send us an explanation of why you were unable to take the test. We may be able to review your application based on the information available. Thanks.
